UFL Outline Week 1

Updated: Apr 8, 2024

Welcome to the first week of our UFL weekly recap, breaking down all 4 games from the merged league XFL and the USFL.

Game Recap

Stallions (27) vs Renegades (14)

The Birmingham Stallions looked like a well-oiled machine in their season opener. Their offense racked up a league-high 409 total yards, led by a strong showing from their running game. The rest of the UFL struggled offensively, with most teams failing to crack 300 yards. The Renegades defense looks solid for most of the 1st half then disappears. They were able to move the ball downfield but struggled in the red zone.

BattleHawks (16) vs Panthers (18)

This was the most entertaining game of the opening weekend, going back and forth. The Panthers with just seconds remaining, kicker Jake Bates launched a game-winning 64-yard field goal! The bad news was that BattleHawks tried to ice him, April Fools, he made it twice and both would have been good for over 70 yards. Jake Bates a primary kickoff specialist, hadn't attempted a field goal since high school. After the first two games, the USFL is 2-0 vs the XFL in conference.

Defenders (12) vs Brahmas (27)

The San Antonio Brahmas (last year's Roughnecks team) had a strong showing at home, defeating the D.C. Defenders. Quarterback Chase Garbers was impressive, throwing for two touchdowns and adding another on the ground. But the most surprising play came on a trick play late in the second quarter that sealed the deal. On a fake punt attempt, punter Brad Wing surprised everyone by launching a 40-yard touchdown pass to center Alex Mollette! The Brahmas' defense also deserves credit, shutting down the Defenders' offense for most of the game.

Showboasts (18) vs Roughnecks (12)

The Memphis Showboats emerged victorious in a low-scoring defensive battle against the Houston Roughnecks. Neither offense could get much going, but the Showboasts' defense stepped up, making key plays throughout the game. Quarterback Daxton Hill managed just one touchdown pass for the Showboasts, but it was enough to secure the win.

Looking Ahead to Week 2

Stallions and the Panthers were the most impressive teams over the weekend, so this will be a fun match-up to watch.

Another important game is how the Renegades and the BattleHawks will respond as they go head to head.
